How can I ease the pain of tendonitis?

Tendonitis is a common problem, but it can be very painful without the right treatment. Below is some basic information about tendonitis and what you can do to ease the pain at home.

What Is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis is a condition that occurs when a tendon becomes irritated or inflamed. A tendon is a thick cord that attaches muscles to bone. If you have tendonitis, you may experience tenderness and pain around the affected joint. Your symptoms may worsen when you move the joint. You may also notice some swelling in the area.

Tendonitis can affect any tendon, but it is most common in the knee, elbow, and shoulder. It is also a common cause of wrist pain and hand pain.

Tendonitis Pain Relief

If you are struggling with pain from tendonitis, you may be able to relieve some of your symptoms at home. Some of the techniques that may relieve your tendonitis pain include:

  • Medications – In some cases, taking an over-the-counter pain medication may relieve some of the pain associated with tendonitis. If your pain is severe, your doctor may recommend a prescription-strength medication instead.
  • Ice – Applying ice to the affected area at regular intervals can also provide pain relief to people suffering from tendonitis. Apply ice to the area for no more than 20 minutes at one time.
  • Rest – Continued activity can make the pain from tendonitis worse. Resting the affected area will usually bring some relief, and it will also give the tendon a chance to heal.

In cases where at-home measures are not enough to relieve the pain of tendonitis, professional treatment may be required. Some of the more invasive treatment measures available to patients with tendonitis include steroid injections, occupational therapy, or surgical procedures.
