Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a fairly common condition. The true cause of CTS is not fully known, but is seen quite frequently in people who perform repetitive activities, diabetics, and people with hypothyroidism.
The symptoms, numbness and/or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, are caused by increased pressure on the median nerve in the hand.
Occasionally, a ‘burning’ sensation or swelling and stiffness of the hand will accompany these symptoms. Most often, symptoms are worse at night, and can cause people to believe that they may have ‘slept on their arm’. Long term, severe, untreated CTS can lead to permanent loss of muscle and sensation in the hand.
